More than 200 women and human rights defenders are in Taliban’s custody, and that number is increasing, the National Resistance Front (NRF) alleges.
A report by the NRF released on Saturday, September 3, revealed the detained protesters have allegedly been tortured by the Taliban.
The protesters were arrested and tortured because they protested “for work, food and freedom, and the removal of educational restrictions,” the report said.
Afghan women have resorted to mass protests in Kabul and elsewhere in the country for their fundamental rights since the Taliban returned to power. They chanted slogans of “food, work and freedom” in the streets.
More than 80 peaceful protests were organized by women across Afghanistan, but they were mostly held indoors due to the fear of the Taliban who responded to the street protests by bullets.
“The Taliban detained and tortured 40 protesters in a single instance,” the report said. “They were released on bail after they were force to confess.”
The Taliban fighters have used force to marry women including underage girls in different parts of the country, according to the report. The investigation into domestic violence cases have dropped to zero. The Taliban’s “de facto” administration dissolved institutions defending women’s rights, including the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the Independent Human Rights Commission, and fired all women advocates, prosecutors, and judges.
