A 19 year old girl who had recently been married without the presence of the groom committed suicide yesterday in in northern Sar-e Pol province. The young woman was a resident of Zanjan village of Sangcharak district.
The young woman celebrated her wedding forty days ago. The husband-to-be was in Iran and did not return to Afghanistan before or after the wedding.
Din Mohammad Nazari, the Taliban spokesman for Sar-e Pol police, confirmed the incident and told local media that the deceased ended her life by gunshot.
“Since the groom did not attend the wedding ceremony and did not come home afterwards, the newlywed felt hatred and ended her life.” Mr. Nazari said.
Suicides and murders of women and girls have increased in some provinces, especially in the north of the country.
