The Taliban guards beat a female student of Balkh University because she was filming the mistreatment of another female student at the university’s gate on Sunday, May 15, an eyewitness said.

The witness, who didn’t want to be named, said a Taliban female guard had stopped a female student and insulted her for wearing a colorful scarf at the university’s gate. Then another female student pulled out her phone to film what was happening.

The Taliban guards, a female and male, started beating the student when they saw her filming. She was also struck by a rifle barrel, according to the witness.

“Recently, the Taliban and their two female guards have been treating the girls badly at the university’s gate,” she said.

She said two female guards searched the girls and inspected their clothes in the past. But now, a Taliban male fighter has also been assigned at the gate to make sure girls wear full veils.

“He doesn’t allow girls to enter the university if they wear colorful scarves or do not wear a face mask,” she said.

Another source, who is a female student at Balkh University, confirmed the beating and insulting incident occurred yesterday.

Etilaat Roz, a local newspaper, reported at least three female students of Balkh University were beaten for wearing colorful clothes yesterday.

Several female students said the Taliban have assigned more male fighters at the entrance of the university, and that they are treating the students violently.

The students said the Taliban verbally and even physically abuse female students if they wear anything colorful recently.
