The Taliban’s department of Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Kandahar has ordered all computer workers, locally known as DJs, not to transfer music and video clips into the smartphones and computers of women if they visit their shops without being accompanied by a man, sources said.
One source, who is a DJ in Kandahar, said the Taliban have given this verbal order about ten days ago, and that they have been strictly monitoring to make sure it has been fully implemented. He spoke on the condition of anonymity due to security concerns.
Before the Taliban, women and men visited computer shops and paid money for the computer workers to transfer music, movies, and sometimes books into their computers and smartphones.
The Taliban in Kandahar have said women can enter computer shops to get soft copies of movies and music only if they are accompanied by a male family member, and when they are in the shop they should stand in a distance from the male shopkeepers.
The Taliban have imposed widespread restrictions on women since they came to power.
The latest restriction in Kandahar seems to be a follow up on an earlier order the Taliban issued banning women from traveling alone, and encouraging them not to leave their homes, and if they leave, a man should be escorting them.
