Taliban publicly whip 116 people, including 22 women, over five weeks

Over the past five weeks, the Taliban have publicly whipped at least 86 individuals, including 22 women, across various provinces in Afghanistan, according to statements issued by the Taliban’s Supreme Court.

The punishments were administered for offenses including adultery, sex outside of marriage, sodomy, robbery, embezzlement, drug-related crimes, and moral misconduct.

April 28: In Sare Pul province, two individuals, including a woman, were whipped 25 to 29 times and sentenced to two years in prison for engaging in sex outside of marriage.

April 29: Four individuals, including two women, were each whipped 39 times and sentenced to two years in prison in Parwan and Nangarhar provinces on charges of adultery and sex outside of marriage.

April 30: Two people, one of them a woman, were whipped 35 times and given one-year prison terms in Balkh province for the same offense.

May 1: One individual was whipped 39 times and sentenced to three years for robbery in Ghazni province.

May 3: In Sare Pul province, one person was lashed 39 times and sentenced to one year in prison for robbery.

May 4: Four people, including a woman, were whipped 30 to 33 times and sentenced to one year in prison in Kunduz and Paktia provinces, accused of adultery and sodomy.

May 6: Five individuals were whipped 16 to 25 times and sentenced to terms ranging from one year to 16 months in Sare Pul and Paktia for embezzlement and gambling.

May 12: Six people, including two women, were lashed and sentenced to six months to one year for running away from home and sex outside of marriage in Kapisa province.

May 13: Four individuals, including two women, received 39 lashes in Badakhshan and Logar provinces on charges of sodomy and sex outside of marriage.

May 14: In Bamyan province, four people, including a woman, were whipped 35 to 39 times and sentenced to terms ranging from two to twelve months for sex outside marriage and robbery.

May 15: Seven individuals, including a woman, were lashed 30 to 39 times in Ghazni and Parwan provinces for sodomy and sex outside of marriage.

May 18: Five people, including a woman, were lashed 15 to 39 times in Ghazni province and sentenced to prison terms ranging from six months to five years for drinking alcohol, adultery, and sex outside of marriage.

May 20: Nine people, including two women, received 20 to 39 lashes and were sentenced to terms of eight months to three years in Kabul and Kunduz for sex outside of marriage and drug trafficking.

May 21: In Logar, Khost, Kabul, and Daikundi provinces, 23 individuals, including three women, were whipped 30 to 39 times for various offenses including sex outside of marriage, sodomy, and drug-related crimes. They were sentenced to one to five years in prison.

May 22: Three individuals, including a woman, were whipped 39 times and sentenced to two years in Takhar province.

May 31: Four people, including a woman, were lashed 30 to 39 times in Faryab province for crimes such as pimping, extortion, and deception, with sentences ranging from five to seven years.

June 1: Eleven individuals, including a woman, were whipped 39 times and sentenced to prison terms ranging from three months to ten years in Samangan, Kabul, and Khost provinces for offenses including murder, robbery, sodomy, and sex outside of marriage.

June 2: Three people, including a woman, were whipped 30 to 39 times in Badakhshan for buying and selling alcohol and fleeing from home, receiving six-month sentences.

June 3: Four people, including three women, were whipped 30 to 39 times in Parwan and Balkh provinces for sex outside of marriage, moral corruption, and adultery.

June 5: Fourteen people, including a woman, were whipped 35 to 36 times in Paktia, Khost, Parwan, and Kabul provinces on charges of fleeing from home and drug trafficking. They received sentences ranging from six months to four years.
