In the past day, a woman has been accidentally shot dead by her son in Badghis province, while a 30-year-old woman and a teenage girl have killed themselves in two separate incidents.

The woman in Badghis was killed reportedly by accident on Sunday by her son who was trying to shoot a dog, according to a local source.

The fatal shooting happened in Qadis Khardak village of Qadis district as the woman’s son was trying to kill a “mad” dog, the local source said, adding that the dog has bitten several residents of the village in recent days.

In Jawzjan province, a 30-year-old woman’s death is under investigation after reports that she killed herself.

A source with knowledge of the Jawzjan incident said the woman lived in Chatgarkhana village in Sheberghan city. They told Rukhshana Media the woman is believed to have shot herself on Sunday.

Abdul Sattar Halimi, the Taliban police spokesman for Jawzjan province, confirmed the incident to local reporters, adding that the cause and motive of the suicide are not yet clear. But an investigation is underway.

In Daikundi province, the provincial police said they were investigating the death of a teenage girl who reportedly hanged herself while at her family home in Shahristan district on Sunday.

Ghulam Ali Jawid, the Taliban’s police spokesman for Daikundi province, confirmed the incident and added that the victim is 15-year-old Fatima.

There have been increasing reports of female suicide and domestic murders for many months, although no official statistics are available.

Mental health professionals have pointed to the restrictions imposed on the rights of women and girls by the Taliban, as well as rising unemployment, and poverty as possibly contributing to the rising numbers.
