Two women committed suicide, and one was stabbed to death in three separate incidents across northern Afghanistan in the past two days.

One woman died after she ate rat poison in Aibak city in Samangan province on Monday, May 23, a local Taliban official said. Firozuddin Farooqi, a Taliban investigator in Samangan, identified the victim as 23-year-old Zubaida, who had recently graduated from Samangan University with a degree in education.

A source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Zubaida was engaged to a man against her will. And her fiance didn’t want her to continue her studies.

Another woman committed suicide by hanging herself in Rustaq district of Takhar province, Bakhtar, the Taliban’s state-owned news agency reported. The incident happened on Monday, May 23. Etilaat Roz, an independent Afghan newspaper, reported the victim was a 32-year-old divorced woman who was engaged to another man without her consent.
