The US Secretary of State named Rina Amiri as the new special envoy for Afghan women, girls, and human rights on Wednesday.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State appointed Rina Amiri as special envoy and Stephenie Foster as a senior advisor to support Afghan women, girls, and human rights in Afghanistan, according to a statement by the State Department.

Stephenie Foster is appointed as a senior advisor for Women and Girls Issues within the Department’s Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts (CARE) team, according to the statement.

Rina Amiri has served as a senior adviser to the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan during the Obama administration and as part of the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General’s political team in Afghanistan.

“We desire a peaceful, stable, and secure Afghanistan, where all Afghans can live and thrive in political, economic, and social inclusivity,” the statement reads.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, they continued their crackdown on women’s rights. In their most recent decree, the Taliban banned out-of-province travel for women without a male chaperone. The restrictive policy announced by the Taliban’s Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice on Sunday also ordered the drivers not to give rides to women who do not observe hijab.

In response to the restriction, women held demonstrations across the Afghan capital, Kabul, chanting for “Work, Food, Freedom.”
