In Afghanistan, transgender, gay, and bisexual people begin to suffer internally from childhood and adolescence, as they gradually come to understand their true identity. They constantly struggle with the painful question of why they are different from others. Much of this suffering is caused by rejection from their families, society, and the environment around them, leading to confusion, inner conflict, fear, and deep psychological trauma. The discrimination, prejudice, and contradictory attitudes of society toward sexual and gender minorities deprive LGBTQ+ people of their most basic human rights, including the right to live freely and safely.
Because being LGBTQ+ is strictly prohibited and criminalized in Islamic countries such as Afghanistan, LGBTQ+ individuals are unable to live openly or express their true identities. Even being falsely suspected of belonging to the LGBTQ+ community can result in severe punishment by family members, society, or the ruling authorities. Human rights violations against LGBTQ+ people in Afghanistan have persisted for many years and have become even more severe since the Taliban returned to power.
We call on the international community, the European Union, human rights organizations, and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups not to abandon the LGBTQ+ people of Afghanistan during this critical time. Please stand with them, amplify their voices, and take meaningful action to help protect their lives and secure a safer future.
We also call on all governments and countries that have pledged to support, protect, and provide resettlement opportunities for at-risk Afghans, especially LGBTQ+ individuals, to honor their commitments and fulfill their promises. Now, more than ever, LGBTQ+ people in Afghanistan urgently need concrete action, safe pathways to protection, and the opportunity to live in safety and dignity.
